Welcome to Sukau Rainforest Lodge
Sukau Rainforest Lodge understood the importance of ecotourism in Malaysia long before “ecotourism” became a buzzword in the Malaysian tourism industry. Located in a wildlife sanctuary along the banks of the Kinabatangan River in Malaysian Borneo, the top ecotourism lodge in Malaysia was built in 1995 according to highest standards of eco-friendly practice. Sukau Rainforest Lodge has since been recognized as a leading organization in the development of sustainable accommodation in Malaysia, and has won numerous awards including a top-50 ranking by National Geographic Adventure Magazine (2009) and first prize in the World Travel Awards as Asia’s Leading Green Hotel (2010). Built in the traditional architectural style native to the Malaysian jungle, Sukau Rainforest Lodge offers newly renovated rooms in lodges constructed on elevated stilts. The height protects the structures from heavy seasonal floods. The rooms were designed with the same attention to sustainability that permeates every corner of the lodge, with amenities such as a cross-air ventilation system and lamps powered by recycled cooking oil. Sukau Rainforest Lodge also offers a comfortable lounge and reception hall, gift shop, restaurant, wildlife viewing docks, and jetty for access to the best views and sounds of the rainforest sunset. The longest boardwalk in Malaysia runs through the property, following the migratory trails of the endemic Pygmy elephants. Passes intersect the boardwalk so the elephants can continue their migratory patterns while simultaneously providing guests the opportunity to see them up close. Owner Albert Teo, president and founder of Borneo Ecotours, anticipated both the negative and positive impacts of tourism in Malaysia, and envisioned a Malaysia lodge that functions to combat the former while promoting the latter. In order to fight pollution and the destruction of the environment that comes with an influx of crowds, for example, he created a fully sustainable Malaysia lodge with solar powered water heaters and a rainwater conversion system. Teo also sought to harness the power of tourism in Malaysia to uplift the surrounding communities, and the Borneo lodge has implemented numerous social projects including the addition of water tanks and various medical projects. Sukau Rainforest Lodge employs approximately 80% of its staff from the local community and offers training programs in order to continue the tradition of sustainability and environmental conservation. Our Mission To excel as an ecolodge by providing a unique experience in hospitality interpretation and conservation with local community participation and leadership development. Be Sustainable With Us The staff at Sukau Rainforest Lodge invites guests the chance to give back. Visitors are encouraged to plant trees, joining in the massive environmental preservation project undertaken by the lodge.
